Rock, soils, climate, landscape and human intervention all work together to create «terroir». This «terroir» is what gives the Château’s wines their authenticity.
The soils of the Château de Passavant originate from the Brioverian period; they consist mainly of schistous rock and metagrauwacke. Situated on medium slopes, 60 m above sea level in very open countryside, they are not very deep (0.50 m). Natural drainage is good and the useful water reserve is low. Their potential for winegrowing is demonstrated by early maturing and low level of vigour.
Some parcels are mainly sandy on the surface or have a high gravel content, which makes them mature earlier than the average for the estate.

The estate works constantly to adapt its grape varieties and rootstocks to the “terroir”, with the aim of obtaining quality AOC grapes that express their identity and originality on the estate.
